EFC 48: Battle for the TITLES!
Friday 22nd April saw another edition of EFC World Wide live at Grand Arena, Grand West in the Mother City. Nothing out of the ordinary, except a vicious storm causing havoc over the city and EFC being broadcast via e-tv (delayed tansmission). Statistics of EFC 47 indicated that EFC was broadcast to over 1.5 million unique viewers and I can only gather that the tellies have increased.
With that being said, two titles were on the line. The Interim Bantam Weight Title and the much coveted Heavy Weight Title. Now for those of you who do not know what the difference between the Title and Interim Title is, click here.
Personally I think this might have been one of the more illustrious Fight Nights in Cape Town in an exceptionally long time. With seven first round finishes (4 TKO's, 1 KO and 2 Submissions) you have to believe that the fans found themselves out of their seats more often than anticipated.
Don "Magic Man" showed the power of his transformation since joining Fight Fit Militia (FFM). Within two months of training at FFM, he professes to have improved as an all round fighter and attributes the growth of his game to his new team. This was visible by his dominant performance and defeat over his opponent Tyson Chelin when he won the fight 54 seconds into the very first round via TKO due to brutal by kicks landed by Madge.
Though not the most anticipated fight, it was definitely the most entertaining and a well deserved FIGHT of the NIGHT! Irshaad Sayed vs Cedric Doyle saw more close encounters than people claiming to have seen UFO's. Doyle is known for his power in the division and landed a number to blows to Sayed's face. When asked in the Post Fight Press Conference what he had to say about Sayed's chin, he simply said, "Eeeerrrr, his got a tough chin". In round 2 there was a time he nearly submitted Sayed when he took Sayed's back and slipped in the Rear Naked Choke. He wasn't able to finish though as Sayed vowed not to tap. Sayed finished 4 minutes 59 secs into round 3 via TKO with a devastating knee to the face of Doyle. Sayed is now the EFC Interim Bantam Weight Champion and looks to unify it when he takes on Demarte Pena.
The main event of the evening saw two giants clashing when Brendon Groenewald faced off against Danie Van Heerden for the EFC Heavy Weight Title. Not the best display for a title fight and certainly not the best these gladiators are known for. Neither fighter seemed to have their cardio up to par but it's seems the one with the heavier hands took it all in the end. Danie Van Heerden won via TKO in the second round. He is now the new EFC Heavy Weight champion.
