A SHOT AT REDEMPTION
Themba Gorimbo (ZIM) vs Jose da Rocha (BRA)

added to massive end of year fight card
With Da Rocha making his EFC debut earlier this year against Dricus du Plessis, he is expected to make his third appearance in the hex come December 16. This time against FFM's, Themba Gorimbo. Though Da Rocha failed to make his mark against the Welterweight (and now Middleweight) champion, he was redeemed at #EFC63 when he put Pritchard away in the very first round. Now, he has another chance to move up the ranks when he faces Gorimba. Will Gorimba allow it? That's another story.
Pretoria, South Africa – This year’s final event has been amplified with the addition of Zimbabwe’s Themba Gorimbo taking on Brazil’s Jose da Rocha. Both are former title contenders, both are hunting for championship vengeance, and for both their path to redemption leads inevitably to their clash.
At EFC 59 Da Rocha first entered the Hexagon in some of the hardest circumstances imaginable. He took on a championship fight against Dricus du Plessis with only seven days’ notice. He had the added challenge of a massive weight cut, an 18-hour flight across multiple time zones and an environment in which he did not speak the local language.
Despite all, he fearlessly entered Carnival City against the reigning champ and brought a war. He suffered a broken rib early and returned to Brazil with a TKO loss, and a vow to set his record straight.
At EFC 63 he returned. This time with a full fight camp at Pitbull Brothers in Macaiba, Brazil behind him, and a complete understanding of what the rigours of travel would bring. He faced an undefeated contender, Cameron Pritchard, and revealed a new breed of athlete. In just 23 seconds he finished the fight by KO, laying Pritchard out with a seemingly laser guided right hand.
The Cape Town crowd was stunned as glimmers of the Brazilian’s true skills shone through. Now he is set to return for a third visit, this time in the hometown of Du Plessis. For Da Rocha, the path to redemption is clear, and it is Gorimbo that stands in his way.
Themba Gorimbo’s reputation as a ferocious fighter is as notorious as his past. He treats every bout as a life or death endeavour, a mind-set that for a man who survived the horror of a central African diamond mine, and years on the streets as he attempted to find a foothold as an immigrant in a foreign country, is both natural and logical.
The same night that Da Rocha faced Pritchard (Gorimbo’s teammate), Gorimbo stepped in against the former lightweight champion Dave Mazany. A misstep gave the American the perfect opportunity for a close-quarters left hook that flattened Gorimbo, putting his title hopes to bed - for now.
Gorimbo petitioned for another fight as soon as possible, asking for the toughest battle that matchmaker Graeme Cartmell could provide. He has his wish. With the experience of a teammate having faced Da Rocha, his gym FFM in Johannesburg will have the strategy in place to find victory.
This potential welterweight decider takes place on the main card, just ahead of the TF1 reality show finale and the EFC bantamweight title unification fight between champion Demarte Pena and Irshaad Sayed.
EFC 66 Pena vs Sayed 2 - TF1 Finale is presented by Constantia Insurance and takes place on Saturday 16 December live from Time Square, Pretoria.
